10 Tips for Smartphone Photography That Sells

7 min read·

1. Use Natural Light

The single biggest factor in photo quality is lighting. Shoot during golden hour (the hour after sunrise and before sunset) for warm, flattering light that brands love.

2. Clean Your Lens

It sounds obvious, but a smudged lens is the most common cause of soft, hazy photos. Wipe your lens with a microfiber cloth before every shoot.

3. Follow the Rule of Thirds

Enable the grid overlay on your camera app and place your main subject at the intersection points. This creates naturally balanced, professional-looking compositions.

4. Shoot in RAW (or Highest Quality)

If your phone supports it, shoot in RAW format for maximum editing flexibility. At minimum, ensure you're shooting at the highest resolution available.

5. Keep It Authentic

Brands are moving away from staged stock photos. They want authentic, real-life moments. Don't over-style or over-edit — natural is better.

6. Think About Commercial Use

Before you shoot, ask yourself: "Could a brand use this?" Photos that work for licensing typically feature:

  • Clear subjects with clean backgrounds
  • No visible brand logos (unless that's the point)
  • Diverse, relatable people and situations
  • Current trends in food, fashion, travel, or lifestyle

7. Include Negative Space

Leave empty space in your frame. This gives brands room to add text, logos, or other design elements — making your photos more licensable.

8. Shoot Multiple Angles

Don't just take one photo. Shoot from different angles, distances, and orientations (both landscape and portrait). More variety means more licensing opportunities.

9. Tag and Title Carefully

When you upload to Pixclaim, add descriptive titles and relevant tags. This helps our AI match your photos with the right brands.

10. Upload Consistently

The more quality photos you have in your portfolio, the more likely you are to get brand matches. Aim to upload at least 5-10 new photos per week.
